The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for the review of all human subject research conducted at the University of Utah. Under minimal supervision, the IRB Director with be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and/or controlling all activities associated with ensuring the safety and welfare of human participants in research involving human participants, their private information, and/or their biospecimens. This position reports to Associate Vice President for Research Integrity & Compliance. The person in this position must be collaborative and well-versed in the federal regulatory landscape.
Essential Functions:
Directs the development and implementation of IRB initiatives to enhance human subject protections and maintain compliance with federal and state regulations
Directs the development and implementation of IRB initiatives to maintain and enhance efficiency and quality in the oversight of human subjects research
Oversees creation and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Provides strategic direction by setting short and long-term goals
Oversees all aspects of staff management including recruitment and retention
Estimates and proposes budgetary requirements for staff, space, and equipment
Directs the development and implementation of IRB audit functions to evaluate compliance with IRB approved protocols
Directs the evaluation and response to instances of non-compliance with IRB policies and approved protocols
Works with University faculty and staff who serve on the IRB panels to maintain and enhance the effective and efficient function of the panels
Works with the University community to recruit an effective and knowledgeable membership for the IRB panels
Works with other research administration offices to facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the offices
Conducts periodic education presentations to the University community regarding IRB policies, procedures, and relevant federal and state regulations
Assesses the needs for human research education in the research community and with IRB members to develop new education options.
Works with IRB colleagues and institutions from around the country to establish and facilitate single or central IRB functions
Ensures customer/research participant satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through
Maintains institutional accreditation of the human research protection program
Oversees the development and maintenance of the IRB IT system
Preferences: Certified IRB Professional
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); 8-10 years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.
