The University of Virginia’s Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) is seeking an Institutional Review Board Director.
VPR’s mission is to advance knowledge and serve the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, scholarship, creative arts, and innovation to enable discoveries that enrich and improve lives. The office is responsible for the strategic vision for research and for developing and executing initiatives to accomplish the vision, as well as the various compliance and support areas. VPR works to catalyze, support, and safeguard UVA research.
The Director is responsible for the overall management and administration of the University of Virginia’s Health Sciences Research Institutional Review Board (HSR IRB).
Essential duties of this position include:
Serving as principal liaison to administration on strategic and operational human subject research issues.
Ensuring that the integrity of the research protocol review conforms to all federal, state, local, and institutional policies and procedures.
Identifying revised and new government regulations or guidance regarding conduct of human subject research for presentation of such information to the Chair and VP for Research and/or incorporation into local policies.
Assuming responsibility for development, monitoring, and revision of Standard Operating Procedures for the IRB staff and the IRB committees.
Collaborating with administration within the various schools to educate and train research personnel to establish and maintain a culture of compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional policies relevant to the protection of human participants.
Developing and implementing the training and continuing educational plan for the members of the IRB committees, the IRB analysts, and any other IRB HSR staff members to ensure that they can perform their role in compliance with federal, state, local, and institutional regulations, guidelines, and policies.
Establishing and maintaining UVA’s visibility and voice at local, regional, and national meetings.
Establishing relationships with authorities and prominent persons in the national and local IRB communities.
Conflict resolution, where it occurs, shall be undertaken by the Director wherever possible or referred upward when resolution is not possible.
Providing leadership, guidance, and supervision of the IRB HSR Analysts and other IRB HSR staff.
Providing day-to-day supervision and oversight for the IRB HSR operational workflow.
Identifying the business requirements for the electronic systems utilized to support the IRB HSR operational workflow. Seeking input from stakeholders and collaborating with owners of other systems supporting research before making any modifications. Notifying users when changes are made.
Collaborating with leadership and stakeholders to identify opportunities for process/system improvements. Participating in efforts within the IRB HSR and within the IRB-HSR and the research community to develop the business requirements and translate them into the workflow.
Serving as informational resource to other IRB staff, investigators, and outside agencies on questions involving policies, procedures, and protocol review.
Advising faculty, staff, research coordinators, and students in preparing human subject research protocols.
Serving as the point of contact during any federal inspections of the IRB HSR. Collaborating with the VPR, the deans, and the IRB Chairperson to appoint new members of the IRB HSR committees.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: 3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree or higher
Experience: 5-7 years of relevant experience
Demonstrated management/supervisory experience
Direct experience in IRB administration
Experience using an electronic IRB submission program
Experience with policy and procedure development
Fluency in medical terminology
Expertise in federal, state and local regulations, and guidelines for the conduct of human subjects research
Computer proficiency, including MS Office suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and other database programs
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
