The Pennsylvania State University is a land-grant Research 1 (R1) university with campuses and facilities throughout Pennsylvania, conducting teaching, research, and public service. The Office for Research Protections (ORP) ensures that research at the University is conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines that protect human participants, animals, students, and personnel involved with research.
Under ORP, the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is seeking an IRB Analyst. The IRB Analyst will report to a Senior IRB Analyst in the HRPP and work in collaboration with all members of the HRPP. The Office for Research Protections is supportive of flexible work arrangements when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of the unit and the essential duties of the position. The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Standard working hours are in the Eastern time zone.
The IRB Analyst's primary responsibilities are to:
Review and approve human research protocols for compliance with governmental regulations and University policy, initiate clear and accurate written correspondence and/or telephone contact with investigators and staff, and request clarification and/or additional information to enable sound judgments to ensure compliance.
Maintain appropriate documentation of compliance reviews and determinations as required by federal regulations and University policy.
Assist faculty, students, and staff in the regulatory preparation of human research protocols for compliance review.
Collaborate in writing, periodically reviewing and updating IRB policies and guidelines, standard operating procedures, and submission forms.
Interact with other University compliance committees and various other University office such as the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and the Office of Information Security.
As needed, assist the IRB Educator in presenting seminars/workshops to Penn State researchers about regulations and policies governing human participants involved in Penn State research.
This position will be filled as a level 4; typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher plus 6+ years of experience research or research-related activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision and demonstrate significant autonomy and judgment with the ability to multi-task and independently reprioritize work to ensure work is completed on time.
A working knowledge of federal regulations and professional standards regarding the protection of human research subjects
Ability to work efficiently in a complex regulatory environment and manage multiple simultaneous projects with meticulous attention to detail is critical
Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required
Knowledge of and experience with electronic data management systems is strongly desired
Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Certification or eligibility to sit for Certified IRB Professional (CIP) within one year of eligibility
