The Senior Director for Clinical Research Administration will play a critical, integrative role leading and managing the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) Clinical Trials Office (CTO). Reporting to the VICC Chief Business Officer/Deputy Director for Strategy and Analytics, the Senior Director will partner with the VICC Chief of Clinical Trials and the VICC CTO Medical Director to facilitate processes so that faculty and staff can grow and expand their clinical investigation and clinical trial portfolio. Critical to this role will be experience in operational efficiency of a clinical trials office in an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and managerial excellence of a large and diverse CTO staff.
The Senior Director will be responsible for the administrative and operational needs and interests of the CTO, which includes interventional and non-interventional clinical trials, select correlative research and the translation of discovery from bench to patients and community as part of an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. This position will include supervision of a large and diverse team of staff members who carry out clinical trials, tissue acquisition, and biospecimen collections for a variety of research programs, and clinical research operational functions of the VICC. The Senior Director will provide expert management of the operational and budgetary needs of the CTSR and oversee clinical research operations, data management, regulatory compliance, quality assurance and safety, the integration of research into clinical operations, and scientific review.
The Senior Director will use research-driven performance measures and prioritize complex situations according to research-driven criteria in order to plan strategically and flexibly (i.e., "get the big picture") and to respond tactically and resourcefully (i.e., "roll up sleeves" and "problem-solve"). This includes responsibility for VICC clinical research projects and clinical trials such as pre-award grant activities and renewal of large grants, in particular, the clinical trials sections of the Cancer Center Support Grant, SPOREs, U10s, U01s U54s, and the NCI National Clinical Trials Network consortia.

The Senior Director will be responsible for administrative supervision and management of all clinical trials in a highly matrix and collaborative environment.
Clinical Research Operations
Oversee and supervise clinical research operations throughout Vanderbilt-Ingram including staffing, professional development, clinical trial grants and contracts, facilities, equipment inventory, space inventory, and clinical trial management systems.
Identify the need, prioritize the implementation, lead the design of business processes, and ensure optimal implementation of administrative and operational support systems for clinical research.
Interact and collaborate frequently with physician leadership, senior leaders, managers, key external partners on strategies to improve research operations and performance pursuant with VICC's goals and requirements.
Promotes and maintains organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Defines and measures accrual and other performance metrics and provides executive leadership with regular status updates on productivity, progress of the trials and alliances; and identifies opportunities of risk and/or improvement.
Clinical Research Grants Administration and Management
Proven ability to work on complex grant mechanisms and support all aspects of the Vanderbilt-Ingram clinical research portfolio.
Direct CTO programs in order to meet and exceed National Cancer Institute expectations for NCI-designated cancer centers, including balanced clinical trials portfolio, trial activation timelines, PRMS processes and impact, patient enrollment representative of the needs and composition of the catchment area and overall clinical trials accruals.
Oversee the operational management of clinical research expenditures, as well as the generation of new research revenue from industry sponsors and externally peer reviewed organizations
Oversee and optimize a total clinical research expense budget in excess of over $14M
Creates an environment that models the mission, vision, values and culture of VUMC and supports staff learning and self-development and establishes measurable performance standards
Leverage clinical research-related resources to achieve VICC's mission and strategic priorities as an NCI designated center
Align research staff to balance workloads and provide highest degree of customer service both internally and externally
Provide extensive and independent mentorship, training, and problem resolution for all staff as well as define staffing expectations, hiring strategies, staff accountability and performance standards; set the pace for clinical research staff to practice proactive issue resolution.
Advocate for staff on personnel issues, including performance evaluation, organizational development, recruitment, and total compensation
Represent the VICC Clinical Trials Office at internal meetings as well as other high level activities at national meetings involving clinical research
