This position is located within the VA RR&D Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology (CfNN) in the Research Service at the Providence VA Medical Center in Providence, RI.
The Lead Health Science Specialist - Research will develop study specific research protocols and administrative materials, coordinate project meetings, will lead and mentor members of the research teams, and will serve as the Leader of the CfNN Core C: Assessment, Outcome Measurement, and Implementation.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
Collaborates with the Principal Investigators (PIs) of multiple VA research studies involving human subjects;
Develops policies, procedures, and criteria for administration of the organization's health science research program's multiple projects;
Selects appropriate guidelines, determining which scientific and regulatory policies apply to a project or a set of projects;
Reviews regular project status reports and statistical data to verify compliance with research reporting and administrative criteria;
Conducts studies, analyzes data, and presents results through presentations and/or publications;
Serves as the lead person responsible for managing interactions between multiple Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and Committees (both internal to VA and with the academic and hospital affiliates);
Develops appropriate work plan based on broad consultation with center leadership and study Principal Investigators regarding priorities and overall program needs;
Ensures the center's strategic plan, mission, vision and values are communicated to the team and integrated into the team's strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products and services;
Performs a variety of lead duties to include articulate and communicate to the team the assignment, project; identifies, distributes and balances workload and tasks; trains or arrange for the training of team members; performance evaluation; provides advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters; hears and resolves minor complaints and grievances; recommends/requests actions such as assignments, reassignments, promotions, awards, etc.;
Reviews data collection and records from samples and specimens to ensure all tracking data is organized and monitored during the progress of the study;
Identifies problems and negotiates corrective action concerning programmatic issues and basic financial management of the site;
Creates charts, tables, and summaries of study data with a high degree of initiative and independence;
Coordinates complex administrative functions for grants, contracts, and dissemination efforts; and,
Performs all other duties as assigned.
