Reporting to the Dean for the Sciences, the Director of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is responsible for leading and managing the submission and review process of research proposals from faculty, staff and students. The Director also provides guidance and training on regulatory and policy matters to the Graduate Center's (GC) research community. S/he provides HRPP-related administrative and regulatory support to the Graduate Center's, including the Advanced Science Research Center, researchers and administrators.
Duties include but are not limited to: - Oversees the HRPP staff’s pre-review of faculty, staff and student submissions requiring Institutional Review Board (IRB) review to ensure completeness and compliance with applicable federal regulations, state laws, and GC and CUNY policies. - Leads a GC-wide education program to train researchers, IRB members and appropriate campus staff on protocol submissions. - Organizes regular workshops on the use of the online HRPP system (IDEATE). - Reviews protocols that meet the regulatory criteria for exemption from IRB review and makes exemption determinations, as appropriate. - Directs the planning and implementation of a needs assessment of GC graduate programs to identify programs’ specific needs in the area of human subject research and then, in concert with GC graduate programs heads, develops curriculum to address these needs. - Serves as a liaison between the CUNY Central Compliance Office and GC researchers. - Maintains regular office hours and is available to student and faculty researchers seeking guidance on approval and renewal of protocols. - Serves as an expert on GC committees and provides guidance related to compliance and research, including relevant Middles States working groups and the GC Committee on Research. - Directs HRPP staff in support of the office’s mission. - May require occasional travel to CUNY's Central Office and various CUNY campuses. - Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required, as well as a thorough knowledge of governmental regulations and compliance requirements and grant and contract management.
A preferred candidate should have: - Master's degree which may be substituted for up to 2 years of experience. - Three (3) years of experience in the application of human subject protection regulations focused on Social and Behavioral Sciences and Humanities. - Experience with researchers conducting ethnographic fieldwork. - Excellent written, critical thinking, organization and time management skills. - Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. - Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of individuals at GC and CUNY and to resolve problems in an effective manner. - Strong technology skills, including with database search and management.
