The Director, Research Oversight – IRB oversees research regulatory related matters and provides guidance and oversight to the various regulatory and administrative functions of the Human Research Protection Program (IRB/Privacy Board), Research Administrative Operations, Administrative Operations team, Spectrum Health System Basic and Translational Laboratory’s Safety Program, the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, in collaboration with System Compliance.

The director will act in an advisory capacity to all who carry research responsibilities on a wide range of issues related to the conduct of research – ensuring the protection of the rights and welfare of human research subjects.
Some essential functions include:
Provides leadership and overall guidance for the establishment and ongoing development of a comprehensive research oversight infrastructure to promote adherence to federal, state, local laws and regulations, ethical standards, and safe practices.
Identifies, establishes and evaluates quality assurance standards, programs, policies, and procedures within the Office of Research Administration to assure safe, effective, and efficient operations that are in alignment with institutional standards as well as organizational and/or programmatic accreditations and/or licensures. Develops, recommends, updates, and maintains organizational policies and ensures they are in alignment with state and federal regulations.
Leads a professional staff of 5 with 3 additional roles approved, working within a robust budget of $35+ million annually. There are 900+ studies currently within the IRB involving over 250 physicians across the Spectrum Health system.
Basic Qualifications: Education - Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Science, or Research-related field Experience - 7 years of experience typically gained through skills/knowledge/abilities with a focus in education, management, process improvement and/or clinical experience in regulatory compliance, along with 2 years of experience in supervisory/management Licenses - Certified Institutional Review Board Professional (CIP)
Preferred Qualifications: Education - Master's Degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Science, or Research-related field Experience - 5 years of experience typically gained through skills/knowledge/abilities in Research regulations Licenses - Certification in research healthcare human subject protections (e.g., Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC), Certified in Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC)
