The Manager, Animal Care Facility, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and overall management of the animal facility at UNLV. Some of the manager's functions include procurement of animals for research, supervision of animal laboratory student workers, control of animal holding facilities and helping to obtain proper veterinary care for the animals. In addition, the Manager, Animal Care Facility, is responsible for ensuring conditions vital to the well-being of animals are met in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act as implemented through the Department of Agriculture regulations and, for federally funded research, the U.S. Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The Manager, Animal Care Facility, reports directly to the Executive Director, Office of Research Integrity.
Applicant must have knowledge of regulations and national standards relating to the care and use of animals in research, issues pertaining to the care and use of animals in research, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) responsibilities and procedures, and the role and value of animal use in biological research. Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills are required.
Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technologist is preferred and the applicant must hold or obtain a valid Nevada Driver's License within 60 days of hiring.
